The Culture War
Home Up Centurion's Letter

"I have only ever made one prayer to God, a very short one: 'O Lord, make my enemies ridiculous.' And God granted it." --Voltaire

This is a page dedicated to the good fight. In case you did not know, there is indeed a culture war raging in this country.  I served overseas for a number of years and went through culture shock coming back home. I'll try to keep you posted on interesting things as I come across them. I went to CPAC 2000 in January just outside Washington D.C. It is the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. I loved it and plan to go next year. It was very inspirational (and for those who don't know me, I am not easily impressed.)

To give you a good example of the battle we are fighting, please read J. A. Gray's article from February's New Oxford Review.

The Hippocratic Oath

For almost two and a half millennia, the Hippocratic Oath has been the ethical creed of the medical profession and truly marked the difference between civilization and barbarism. While visiting some liberal friends last year, we got into a discussion about the Oath. As I am a conservative, they wanted an "outside" opinion about some of the things I had said and so they called another friend who was currently in his third year of medical school. He told them that he had never read the Hippocratic Oath! We called two other medical students (at a different school), but they were also not sure what was in the oath. One said that their school had their own ethical "guidelines," which they studied. This is evidently going on in many medical schools. Why don't you read the oath and see if you might guess why it is no longer in favor?  Please write me and let me know what you think.  I have posted two versions: a translation of the original and the modern version drawn up by the World Medical Association after World War II..
